The Hague International Model United Nations 2007

The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) is one of those life-changing experiences one looks back upon with great joy, pride, and a sense of fulfillment.

This year the CIV delegation was fifteen-people strong and represented Turkey, a country at the center of international focus.

Throughout the week our closely-bond delegation tried to convince the rest of the world (ie the other 3500 delegates present) that Turkey held to the solutions to many of the world’s issues. For one week, each of us played the part of a professional diplomat, suit and all. We discussed solutions to such issues as poverty, disarmament, conflicts and environmental threats, bearing in mind the point of view of the entire world. Just like at the real UN in New York City.

We were submerged in an incredibly fun and stimulating environment, in a kind of melting-pot with people from all over the world, including China, South Africa, Australia, Kuwait, the United States, Peru and Germany, all with one common goal : learning and sharing. Learning how to better communicate with others, how to make new friends and about how to make a difference in our world. Throughout the week we evolved into more self-confident individuals who learn to develop their full potential.

THIMUN 07 was a week of achievement for all of us. Many of us co-submitted resolutions which passed in our respective committees. Some of us delivered acclaimed speeches. One of us even main-submitted a resolution which passed in the plenary session. Most importantly we all grew socially and intellectually.

Let us not forget the « wild » nightlife of The Hague. Serious delegates by day and mere teenagers by night, letting loose after the day’s formality. The Friday night dance organized for all THIMUNers will undoubtedly remain as a memorable experience for all of us as well.

This inspiring week at The Hague came as the reward of half-a-year’s active debating and participation in MUN. All those who will still be at the CIV next year can’t wait to share this incredibly enriching experience with you next year…See you in September !
